Barrier is a Skill in Titan Quest 2 (TQ2) that is useable by all Builds, and is located inside the Core Mastery. Spending Skill Points will allow you to assign Modifiers to Barrier which can make it reflect damage, last longer and even heal you.
While under the effect of Barrier, Damage that you take will be removed from your total Barrier rather than from your Health, acting as a "damage shield" of sorts. Your total Barrier is made up of your Energy Barrier and your Free Barrier and "decays" after a short time if no damage is taken while it is active.

Energy Barrier provides Barrier, but will increase the Energy cost of the Skill based on your Barrier Conversion Rate. This skill costs 0 Energy by default until you have some Energy Barrier. The higher your Barrier Conversion Rate, the less Energy you will need to spend to use the Barrier skill when you have Energy Barrier. You can improve your Barrier Conversion Rate via the Fast Barrier Modifier, and the Storm Protection passive, and gaining levels (0.15 per character level), lowering the Energy cost of this skill.
Energy Barrier is found on Magos Robes and Plated Robes (Armor), and can be found on Shields and Armor passively via the "of Sanctuary" Suffix.
Free Barrier simply provides Barrier when you use the Barrier Skill, without increasing the Energy cost of the Skill, making it superior to Energy Barrier. You will usually find Free Barrier on Shields, but you can find it on the Barrier Preservation Modifier of the Battlefield Awareness skill.
Barrier "decays" over time if not removed via enemy damage, and the rate at which it decays is effect by your Barrier Decay Rate. The lower your Barrier Decay Rate, the longer your Barrier will last before fully depleted. You can lower this via the Preparation Modifier, Barrier Decay Modifier and Enduring Barrier Modifier.
Barrier Decay Threshold refers to the amount of Barrier that will remain once your Barrier has fully decayed. So for instance if it was 100 Barrier Decay Threshold, you would still have 100 Barrier after it has fully decayed. You can increase this via Barrier Preservation Modifier, the Barrier Decay Threshold Modifier and Storm Adaption.
Total Barrier refers to the combined amount of Energy Barrier and Free Barrier you have.
Remember that this Skill has a 12 second Cooldown by default, so equiping gear that has "increased Cooldown Rate" will allow you to use Barrier more often, as will using the Fast Barrier Modifier.
The Barrier gained from the skill itself increases with each Character Level, as does the Barrier Conversion Rate, so this skill will get more effective the higher level you go to account for increased difficulty.

Titan Quest 2 Barrier Modifiers
Modifiers in Titan Quest 2 can change the way that certain skills work, and each one requires a certain amount of Capacity in order to slot it. Max Capacity increases as you place more and more Skill Points into any give skill, allowing you to slot more Modifiers further improving the chosen skill.
Barrier has a maximum Capacity of 10. Each rank of a Modifier costs a certain amount of Capacity, so if you want more ranks of it, you will need more Capacity in order to improve it.
